So a hospital bed mattress is a form of an adjustable bed because most hospital beds are designed to maneuver in several directions while maintaining support for the patient. It is important that these beds be durable and comfortable as they will carry the weight of several different sized individuals and be called on to perform various medical functions to help or aid hospital personnel. Hospital bed mattresses are available with inner springs, fairly traditional as well as air mattresses which allow for more comfort and functionality.
The inner spring hospital bed mattress is by far the most common because it is easy and cheap to manufacture. Additionally they are manufactured along with the actual bed and are designed to be packaged and shipped out with economics in mind and not comfort. Most of the medicare beds you get from a medical supply company are just rentals, what is strange is that the foam mattress is not that much more expensive but offers far superior comfort. The reason is because the materials used to make an inner spring bed are very poor in quality which means the springs don’t really offer any support and are not designed to last very long. While on the other hand a hospital bed mattress made from foam has a hard inner core that is resilient in and of itself as well as a more comfortable outer lining.
So one of the primary questions you should be asking yourself is what purpose will the hospital bed mattress have? Are you using it because you are taking care of a loved one? Is this mattress going to be placed on a standard bed frame or an adjustable bed? What functions are you looking for from the bed.
If what you need the hospital bed mattress for is simply home care needs for a loved one, or for an assisted living situation any of the standard hospital beds will work perfect, just as long as you order in accordance with your budget. Keep in mind that in general the more you spend the more comfortable the bed becomes. Also, consider the amount of time you will be using the hospital bed for. If you only need it for 6 months then a cheaper mattress that wears down faster will not be an issue. However, if you need the mattress for any extended period of time, say a year or more – you may want to consider a more durable foam mattress.
