Whether you are looking to outfit your home with just 1 queen mattress or several rooms with queen mattresses it will be crucial to know the measurements and prices of the different brands so that you can get a nice, plush queen mattress in each room.  I myself am partial to the firm queen mattress but each of us have our own preferences, I like the firm because I have a larger frame and a soft or plush bed cannot support my back leading to constant sleeping pains.

Queen Mattress Measurements

The standard queen mattresses are 60 inches wide and 80 inches long or in other words 5 feet wide and 6 feet 8 inches long.  So while there are not many people who need more than the 80 inches in length in order to be comfortable, there are many people who will find that splitting 5 feet in half for you and your husband or wife.  That works out to be 2 and 1/2 feet of plush or firm queen mattress for each of you, (30 inches.)  The average male shoulder width is 20 inches, leaving 5 inches of space on each side if you only lay flat.  Not matter how big or small you wife is you will still ultimately be splitting the bed especially if its an adjustable bed frame.

The average bed skirt is 15 inches, meaning the top of the box spring of the bed is 15 inches from the floor.  A bed skit hangs over the box spring and is meant to cover the space created by the bed frame so that the under carriage of your bed is hidden.  When you are thinking about a room in your home and the size of bed you want to place in there consider the amount of room yourself of the guest has to maneuver on each side of the bed.  If there is not enough space around the queen mattresses to walk, turn and sit, then the room is too small for the bed.

Queen Mattress Prices

Prices really can vary depending on the manufacturer and the quality level of the mattress you want.  On the low end you can buy queen mattresses for between $200 and $500 dollars.  These beds are typically spring coiled and not made of very good materials – but if you are strapped for cash they can be a good option.  On the medium end you can expect to pay between $500 and $1,000 for say a typical simmons queen mattress.  These will last a little longer and add more comfort, usually this is the price range people choose in order to give their guests a good nights sleep or to bide some time until they themselves can afford a higher quality firm queen mattress.  On the higher end a superior quality queen mattress will go for anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000 depending on the type of bed you want.  Only purchase an expensive queen bed if you are planning to use it yourself for a very long time, otherwise you will just end up up-grading to a king in the near future.
